Countdown to CanadaI selected Grand Rapids, Mn. to be the storage point for the bus and trailer as I planned to enter Canada at Fort Frances, On. (International Falls, Mn.) Serendipity is alive and well. I saw an equipment rental place and stopped to ask if they knew of a place I could store the bus and trailer, the owner, Drew, had another business that had space. He let me put the bus between 2 storage buildings and even set the rental rate. So Coffee and I loaded up the Saturn and headed for the border. With passport in hand, Coffee's shot records, her crate and very little else we made it to Canada. After 3 questions about where my gun was (guess it's a "Texas Thing"), and a grilling on just how I knew Duncan Forlong(must be HIS reputation), they let us in. I called Duncan and he told me to park at the Days Inn at lakeside in Kenora and he picked us up. |

If you ever get a chance to go to Kenora on Lake of the Woods, don't miss it! |

Gail and Duncan Forlong were my wonderful hosts for a delightful visit to Kenora. They have enjoyed the family lake home (founded in 1884 by Duncan's grandfather) for almost 50 years and if they are not Kenora's "First Family", then no one knows who it might be. One of the landmarks on the lake is the Grace Anne II, and elegant ship originally owned by the Forlong Family. With 5 or 6 boats in the family the dock is the first sight and it's Duncan's pride and joy. The current project is indirect lighting along the dock rail. He directed current Boat Boy, Rob Sprague in the task at hand. I went to morning coffee with Duncan several days, and it seems that many of the town's civic leaders held that internship over past summers. Duncan and Gail shared so many of their activities, not to mention their comfortable home. Waffle Wednesday (and Sunday) at the beach is a fun gathering on Coney Island. (This is one of thousands of Islands on Lake of the Woods... the only time you can get there by car is in the winter when they open an ice road.) |

Getting around the Island has been made a bit easier since Duncan introduced the first Golf Cart some years ago. Now many folks have them. Even neighbor Helen has a new tractor that she rides to Waffle Wednesday. It was so nice to see Helen and Jo Anne every morning for coffee and conversation. Duncan overloaded the differential on his cart by installing an industrial strength motor this summer. Rob took it apart under Duncan's direction and I'm sure has it back in service by now. |

Coffee was graceiously accepted as a member of the family. Duncan even let her use the reverse side of the cushion on his chair. She loved the lake and the run of the yard (until her digging got her restricted to the deck.) I golfed with the guys on Thursday and stayed out late on Boys-Nite-Out. Ian Johnson was kind enough to give me a ride back to the Forlong's in his boat, of course. Everyone has one or several boats and it is an absolutely delightful lifestyle. When I got back, Coffee was waiting patiently by the bed and was happy to see me. |

Duncan put me to work one day stacking firewood. I was glad to help and was particularly pleased when he pronounced it a "good job". Two days later most of it had fallen down, so I re-stacked it. I don't know if Duncan saw that it had fallen... he probably did, but didn't give any demerits. I also helped as he installed a timer for the fountain. I had quite a good time working on that little project. I had many a nice visit with Gail. I can't express how at home they made us feel and how grateful we are for their hospitality. Thank you, Duncan and Gail!
